Shocking: MacBook MELTS While Playing DVD

Thanks to a reader for reporting this to us. A German MacBook owner has found out the hard way just how hot the MacBook’s can get. Apparently while leaving the MacBook relatively unattended and watching ‘Scary Movie’, the users MacBook got so hot it actually began to melt the plastics! This is shocking, and the first report of a MacBook actually melting under extreme heat we have received. The German user is surprisingly light hearted about the situation, laughing and joking on message boards. Apparently he has contacted Apple and is receiving a replacement. Click here for the original message board post (in German). He posted several pictures, which are displayed below:

MacBook’s are well documented to produce tremendous amounts of heat. Our AppleDefects MacBook easily reaches and sustains processor temperatures of 95 degrees celcius (203 farenheit) when running under load, with absolutely zero cooldown despite the tiny fan blasting. The super heated air that is produced is then blown out the small back port. You’d never want to use our particular MacBook on your lap without a thick book or some other protective pad, the heat produced is scolding - but so far not hot enough to physically melt the machine itself. It should be noted Apple doesn’t recommend using laptops on your lap, as we have reported on in the past.

While we certainly hope this remains an extremely isolated incident, other hot computer stories have been popping up around the web. Most recently, a slew of Dell Laptop’s have been igniting into flames for some unknown reason. Another German site, MacEssentials.de has several pictures of flaming Dell laptops.
