MacBook Pro 1.83 Ghz - Logic Board Replacement

Posted in News by admin on the June 22nd, 2006

Going on the advice of bbianchi, a forum regular, I called apple to inquire about a possible logic board replacement for my whiney and hot 1.83 MacBook Pro.

bbianchi reported that :

So in dealing with my f***d to hell and back situation, I have found that as of Today (maybe sooner??) Apple has updated the MacBook Pro logic board. The update is to at the VERY least resolve the CPU Whine issue. There are very little details that Apple is releasing to my contact as far as what was done and what it effects. However, there is a certantity that it may resolve my problem with the whine.

The first person I reached via telephone was utterly worthless. I know this is typical, so I asked politely to have the phone call “escalated” to someone that could help me. After waiting on hold for several minutes I was transfered to a Product Specialist. I went through the whole story again about how my MacBook makes a “buzzing” and “whiney” noise and I was initially told that the only fix he knew about was for a screen inverter problem. This was a valid problem, but it was only on earlier models of the MacBook Pro and it wasn’t was causing the noise on mine. I informed him of the difference between the two problems, and tried to come at the issue from a totally different angle. I then simply asked:

Me: “Yes or No? Has there been a logic board update to the 1.83 Ghz MacBook Pro?”

… Next person who talks loses, so I sat in silence …

Product Specialist: “Let me see if I can find anything in the computer, but I haven’t heard anything”

I could hear his typing over the phone and after a minute or two I was told that there actually IS an official logic board replacement for the 1.83 MacBook Pro, and that I was eligible for the replacement. I was thrilled, to say the least. The P.S. went on to say (sounded like he was reading from some kind of documentation)

“The new logic board is supposed to eliminate or greatly reduce the cpu whine.”

I am moving forward with the repair, and a box is being overnighted to my house. I will keep everyone informed down to every last detail.

So… I am happy to announce that apple (at least for the 1.82 GHZ MacBook Pro owners) IS admitting to having a problem with the cpu whine, and there is a fix. Call apple, complain your way to a product specialist and demand (in some what of a polite way) a new logic board. It worked for me.

Cheers,

CK
